Bahrain Vs. Japan: No work ethics! バーレーン Vs. 日本: いいえ労働倫理!

10 September, 2008

I wanted to wait a little bit after we lost 3:2 against Japan before I write anything. Why? Because I am very angry and very ashamed.
First of all let me say that I love Japan. I learn Japanese, I have Japanese friends and both me & my wife enjoy the food too.
So usually I do support Japan.
I am angry of course because our team is making us look bad. Very bad.
In that match I saw nothing but stupidity. Milan Macala has no blame in this. Even if Bahrain got Alex Furgeson as their trainer nothing will change. Why? The players have no decent work ethics.
What do I mean? Lets recap on what I saw:

  • I saw two defenders running to the ball, slamming into each other, falling on the ground and the ball kept going.
  • I saw two players running to the side lines to throw a ball in, they did not know who would actually throw the ball in, one threw it anyway, so it took two grown men in the same spot to throw a ball. Making the other man useless.
  • I saw players running alone, then tripping and falling down all by them selves.
  • I saw blind passes. No one saw where he was passing to. The passes were either out, hit one of our players in the face or passed smoothly to the Japanese players
Common sense says: No coach on earth will tell players to run into each other. No coach on earth will tell players to pass to the other team.
Our players are bored and careless. They are not serious and I am really really ashamed to be in the same country as these "men". They give my country a bad name. Does the world think we are that useless?
I, of course, will not allow that. If I cannot fix that stupid team, at least I will do my best so that the world will know we are not as stupid and useless as the team. This post will be translated into Japanese (with a big help from Google). Hopefully some Japanese people will see it. They have the highest bloggers per population rate on earth after all.
So, if you are Japanese, please post a comment. Either in English or Arabic (if you know them), or translate your comment from Japanese to English in Google, or just post it in Japanese and I will do it myself.

Today Bahrain plays against Qatar. I don't want to watch it but I guess I have to.
Good luck to Nippon in their coming matches.

Taekwondo Olympian attacks referee, proves he is a crybaby

23 August, 2008

This Cuban "Olympian" is Angel Valodia Matos. Matos was a Sydney 2000 gold medalist. So on he comes to Beijing to compete once more.

In the middle of the second round of his +80kg bout against world silver medalist Arman Chilmanov of Kazakhstan, he broke his left toe. Taekwondo rules will stop the clock for injury for one minute. Any longer and the contestant is deemed unfit to continue. Chong (Red player) took more than that one minute, so the Swedish referee (of Arabic north African decent) declared Hong (Blue player) as the winner.

The Cuban and his coach did not like to lose to Uzbekistan that way, so once the ref announced the verdict, Matos attacked him with two kicks to the head.

Being an Ex-Taekwondo athlete and a life long fan, I watched this live and was appalled and enraged by this violent act of a cry baby sore loser.

The World Taekwondo Federation seemed to share my feelings as they immediately announced that Matos and his coach would be permanently barred from all championships it promotes. They said:

"This is a strong violation of the spirit of taekwondo and the Olympic Games"

"The sanctions are the following and are effective immediately: Lifetime ban of the coach and athlete in all championships sanctioned by the World Taekwondo Federation and at the same time, all records of this athlete at the Beijing Games will immediately be erased."

Serves him right. Congratulations to the WTF on its swift and stern reaction. And to Matos: You are a disgrace to all Athletes on earth, be they martial artists or else. Your Sydney 2000 medal is undeserved in this light and it is a shame to see it wasted on an arrogant cry baby such as your self.

It is a good thing that we will never see you again. Good riddance.

Bahrain Vs. Japan: World Cup Qualifiers 2010

25 March, 2008

tomorrow at 5:30 PM, the match starts. You can see it on Aljazira sports or Bahrain Sports ground (The non satellite channel). I'll be in a final exam unfortunately.
I welcome the Japanese team, hope they play a good game.
Good luck to our national team, that is all they rely on.

Aldoys in the USA Open Taekwondo Tournament

11 February, 2008

Isa and his sister Reem (pictured) flew over to USA to take part in the US Open Taekwondo Tournament. Along was their father & coach (my coach too) Sabumnim, Abdulla Aldoy. This is Isa's first mens competition, although he enters it as a veteran after winning several age group tournaments.
The tournament has players from:

  • USA (well, obviously!)
  • Bahrain
  • Canada
  • Germany
  • Mexico
  • Puerto Rico
  • Colombia
  • Romania
  • Korea
  • Kenya
  • Brazil
  • Nepal
Aldoys are the only ones representing Bahrain and the Arab world. The full roster of players are found here.
According to the website, it should have been finished yesterday, but I can't find for the life of me any results posted on line at all. It's like everyone is busy with the tournament to post anything and the media is busy with other sports. Shame that.
I wish them good luck and if anyone knows anything about it, please leave a comment. Thanks.

Egypt are the African Champions

Yesterday, I skipped a lecture at university, headed straight home to throw away my suit and wear the "gahwa" uniform, I have a match to catch.
I reached the gahwa, seats were filling up quick and becoming rather rare. 3 friends came and joined me. Egypt was playing Cameroon for the title of "the African Champion".
90 nail biting minutes. The Egyptians again played like men. They played like it personally mattered to them, like it is a matter of pride and honour, like a plague of unholy death was to befall them should they lose.
These men fought, and might I add, with a sporting spirit.
Mr. Hubail, Mr. Salmeen, I hope you saw that match yesterday. I really do. Call up the rest of the team mates, do you have their phone numbers? Well call them up and make sure they saw that. y'know, just to have an idea what fighting for one's country is like, if you'd ever be interested in something like that.
Egypt had a solid defense line, a strong middle and dangerous attackers. Alhadari was an amazing goal keeper as well, saving the Egyptians numerous times.
Their strategy was sound and well implemented. That was a performance I can hardly fault.
Congratulations Egypt. Unlike others that come to mind, you are making arabs proud. Thank you.

Egyptian Attitude, making me proud to be an Arab again.

10 February, 2008

Once upon a time, I used to write a sports column in a local newspaper, then I used to post in my blog about Bahraini sports. The column was dropped and the posts got less frequent. The sporting situation in Bahrain is so pathetically useless that it was mentally and emotionally straining to write about.
And then I watched the Egypt Vs. The Ivory Coast match (CAF Africa Cup of Nations). The Egyptians won 4-1 in a fierce and competitive battle.
The Egyptians fought hard, stuck to the plan and passed pin point passes. But no amount of technical strategy or fitness can equal a variable called "HEART". Yes, the Egyptians played with heart. With courage. Made themselves proud, and made me proud to be an Arab.
Not so with our "National" team, unfortunately.
I see my team, the one bearing MY flag, walk around the pitch instead of running, heads down. Like they are waiting for something to happen.
MY team is satisfied with simply passing in the general direction of a team mate, if it so happens to land dead centre between the legs of the opposing team player, so be it.
Where is the fire? Where is the spark? Where is the passion that I saw in '04?
As an HR professional, morale is very high on my list. No one can perform with a bad attitude, and the problem is that bad attitude is very contagious.
Bahrain won over Oman recently 1:0 in it's Asian World Cup qualifiers. I am glad we won, upset we sucked.
I am fed up of the whiny, overconfident, unresponsive and fragile players. kick them all out for all I care. The only people who should be in the national team are ones who beg to be in it, who want it. I don't care if I lose so long as I feel and see my team give out their all. Bored players are no good for me.
Thank god for Egypt for keeping my Arabic sports pride from dying.

Bahrain's next World Cup group

26 November, 2007

Last night, in Durban, South Africa, the Asian World Cup Qualifiers groups were set as follows:

Group 1:

  • Australia
  • China
  • Iraq
  • Qatar
Group 2:
  • Japan
  • Bahrain
  • Oman
  • Thailand
Group 3:
  • South Korea
  • North Korea
  • Jordan
  • Turkmenistan
Group 4:
  • Saudi Arabia
  • Uzbekistan
  • Lebanon
  • Singapore
Group 5:
  • Iran
  • Kuwait
  • UAE
  • Syria
Very interesting huh? In my opinion, the toughest and least predictable group has to be the first. Australia is a new power house, China is a force to be reckoned with, Asia knows what Iraq can do and Qatar are pretty solid them selves.
All group 1 clashes should be very interesting and dramatic.

Our group (the 2nd one), is still rather close but with clear advantage to Japan. Oman is getting stronger and Thailand is known to pull upsets. We on the other hand are poorly managed and poorly coordinated. Our kind of football cannot be prepared for because of the fact that the players are not disciplined. And if they don't know what they're doing, how can their opponents? Thats how we win!
Group 3 will be won by South Korea.
Group 4 will see Saudi Arabia battling against the Uzbek. Lebanon and Singapore aspire to have fun while they travel, no more.
As for Group 5, Iran will surely preside. Kuwait is gone, UAE was a fluke and Syria has no hope. This is a cake walk for Iran.

Only Five Group winners and five runner ups will go through. I expect them to be:
  • Iraq & Australia
  • Japan & (one of the remaining three)
  • South Korea & Jordan
  • S. Arabia & Uzbekistan
  • Iran & .. maybe UAE.
I suggest to our Bahraini supporters to take Aspirin before the match. Both to help with the headache and to prevent blood clots and strokes from happening.

Racing with the Red Racing Team

22 May, 2007

The guys down at Marlboro have an annual event, which is the Marlboro Red Racing. This year, I WON!
Neat huh?
I am traveling to Dubai today to join them along with 34 other Bahrainis.
Looking forward to it, can't wait. Especially after seeing this short video from last year.

Final day of Tournament

30 April, 2007

I arrived at the Umm Ahasam Sports arena next day and found several of my old training buddies. I miss the tournament atmosphere.
Sadly our guys didn't win golds as usual today. Why? Make up your own mind. I managed to capture Habib's last fight on my P990i. But You tube said it was too long. I'll try to split it up. Anyone know a good video editor for PC?

So he wins at the end of Round 3, ref gives him a 1 point penalty to return his score to zero equalling his opponent (score 0 after three penalties). They go into sudden death and some how his opponent wins.

This is what Sabumnim Aldoy had to say:

They are champions so no big deal. They won medals before and will continue to win many more. All the best to them.

The tournament was chaotic and messy. True that allot of people will say that most TKD tournaments are like that but that's not an excuse. It could have easily been given to an event manager. And why not hire marshals? volunteers. They'd do it for free like the F1 does. Heck I would have done it.

Still it was a very good effort as a first and I can not wait for the 2nd tournament!

Bahrain's First Open Taekwondo Tournament

28 April, 2007

Bahrain is enjoying it's first Open Taekwondo Tournament (BMAA website). It opened the day before yesterday and had it's children & women competitions yesterday. Today is the men's competitions.
I used to do TKD with Aldoy's club. Obviously I stopped at a Redbelt, but I try to follow up on the club's news and participations.
The tournament lists 400 players which isn't a small feat. Countries I saw were Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, Jordan, Iran& Iraq.
The Irani team is always tough so it'll be intresting to see them. I heard rumors about the Iraqi team enrolling players older than what they declared them to be. I am not sure but I did see one player get disqualified, and they do look a bit taller then the rest of the kids.
Now Aldoy's TKD is famous for being tough competitors. They have a solid Women team, and the fact that they got most of the women medals isn't surprising really. The first day results can be found here in Arabic. I'm off to see the rest of the clashes today, if you have the time, drop by the Umm Alhasam sports dome just off Adliya.

Pictures, top to bottom:

1-Part of the women matches
2-Part of the kid matches
3-Sabumnim Aldoy taking to the ref. between rounds
4-The Doy Girls team
5-Salman Yousef, Doy's team Black belt

Milan Matchala spotted at the Ritz Carlton Bahrain

07 March, 2007

Today, at 11:33 AM, as I was getting into the Ritz Carlton Hotel, I saw Milan Matchala, the famous (GCC wise at least) football coach get out of the hotel, and into the back of a beige BMW 7 series where he was chauffeured away.
Alwatan newspaper predicted that there are plans to recruit him to coach the Bahraini football team. True enough, he is here. However, Alwatan's headline today reads that he says he is here on a "Family Visit".
I would believe that save for the fact that he was chauffeured away. You do not get a BMW 7 series with its own chauffeur if it was a family visit. Someone provided him with that and my money goes to that he will be the next Bahrain coach.
I managed to grab a quick pick as he was pulling away, but it's not very clear. Sorry, my phone camera needs some time to be ready.
But at least, now you know!

Shaikh Salman questioned!

19 January, 2007

For viewers of the excellent Qatari channel "Aldawri walkas" (league & cup), yesterday's "Almajlis" show was quite intresting.

Their set was recreated in the UAE to follow up on the 18th Gulf Tournament. As you must know, Bahrain got slaughtered as usual. So they were discussing that.

Amongst the crowds, were the Bahraini goal keeping icon Mr. Hmood Sultan as usual, and Shaikh Salman Alkhalifa, the top man of the Bahrain Football Association as a guest.

Simply put, the man was under a barrage of questions from Qatari, Iraqi, Saudi guests and others. Basically everyone asked in a nice way: "Why do Bahrain suck?"

The local media have often complained that opening the doors to make Bahrain players pro was bad as it hurts the team. And that's something Sh. Salman stated as well. but.. a smart man popped up and asked: "How can you say turning players pro is bad, while Matchala (Oman's coach) says its the best thing that ever happened to his players?". Here's a loose translation:

"Well, our coach have noticed that the professional players stamina is under what we require"

"How come? They play as first line start ups in the Qatari league, never missed a match or a practice. I'd understand if they were subs but they're not"

"well.. I'm simply quoting what our coach is saying"

"What do you think?"

"Well, they're awfully tiered because of all the matches they play"

"That can't be right! The Qatar league players have returned to their home teams in Oman Bahrain & Qatar itself. Why isn't this affecting them?"

"um.. well.. you see, being away so long, they lack the coordination and understanding achieved by staying under our supervision"

"yes, but the same goes for the other teams and they do not have that problem. Further more, most of your team players are playing together since '98!"

"....."

I couldn't believe it! They were really putting him on the spot! But they were right, whatever reasons we repeat for our failures, aren't exclusive to us. it only affects us. nice.

Khalid Jassim (the host) asked him later about our "imported" players (for those who don't know: there were several non Bahraini's given passports in order to compete for Bahrain. Both for football and other sports), Shaikh Salman said that he can't comment. His response was nice as he said: "As long as there are legal documents proving they are Bahraini citizens, I can't really treat them as not."

Interesting, but the host followed up "And how did they become citizens?"

"They meet certain criteria"

"How?"

"I did not take the decision to make them nationals"

"Who did?"

"Clubs."

"Do they have that power?"

"The government only does"

"And we know that the people behind these clubs have strong connections with the government. Right?"

I swear, he must have thought it was a simple guest appearance. I didn't even think they'll cross examine the man ON LIVE TV like that. But its true, Bahrain's team have little reasons to suck. There are problems but I have the feeling that I hear fake, unaccountable problems. It will all lead to some rotten smell. Whether turning a blind eye to the mediocre performances, or the shady reasons why coaches leave and infrastructure is poorer than that of a decent school.

I give it about 2 years before a real football scandal surfaces. Everyone hates it, everyone smells fish. While the BFA's PR says "We're A-OK!". Surely that can't last long.

this post is dedicated to my friend Nawaf. No reason, he simply asked me to dedicate it to him. God knows why.

Saudi trumps Bahrain 2/1

18 January, 2007

Ah but of course.
Bahrain played against Saudi Arabia an hour ago in the 18th Gulf cup. And lost.
While Bahrain lead the score through a penalty kick, Saudi soon scored back the same way.
What made matters worse is that 2 Bahraini players got sent off. Saudi's squad simply dominated the match thereafter, albeit with little effect. Its only logical that eventually they'll score and that they did.
*sigh* can't say I watch the match expecting otherwise. I did expect poor performance, but I didn't expect that 2 players get sent off. And it seems that the main goalie (Abdulrahman Abdulkarim) probably injured his left knee. great!
Mohammed Hussain (DF) got into a rage after being sent off (2nd yellow). Most people do but his rage was quit long! He was very persistent and violent, it took about 3 players, a coach assistant and a slap from the coach himself to get him in order and out of the pitch. That's gonna leave a black spot on his record there.
Ah well... Here's hoping for better results.

18th Gulf Cup launched

The 18th Gulf Cup Tournament have launched yesterday in Abu Dhabi, UAE. with UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman & Yemen Participating.
I love these tournament. I don't know, but you can smell the rivalry in the air. Its like when two neighbouring schools play. Here, everyone wants to best the other, and to some, its more important that the world cup, because you see, you can rub it in your neighbour's face afterwards! :)
Yesterday UAE played the opening with Oman, which ended in a 2/1 score in favor of the Omanis. The ref was tough. But I can't cut any slack for the Emarati team who were obviously violent.
And to my surprise, Yemen beat Kuwait to score in a match ended in a draw. The Yemen team was always a pushover. Of course being high on Qat does that. HOWEVER, Qat was banned this tournament and whuddya know? Yemen got an amazing 3 pass efortless goal! Kuwait was lucky to draw with a penelty kick goal. They deserved to lose.
Yeah I know, the skill levels are lacking. But still, this rivalry smell is so tempting!

Figo will transfer to Al-Ittihad. CONFIRMED!

06 January, 2007

In a statement that goes against what Inter officials said, Luis Figo, the Portuguese player has signed a contract with the famous Saudi club "Al-Ittihad".
Mr. Mansoor Albalui announced yesterday that the superstar and former Real Madrid player will be on contract for a year starting July 1st, 2007.
Still, Mancini's words were partially true, that Figo isn't leaving Inter to join the Saudi club. Figo will wait until his contract expires in 6 months and then will join the Saudi powerhouse. The contract was signed here in Manama, Bahrain yesterday. The contract amount was unannounced but speculations revolve around 4.5 million euro.
It should be a great new opportunity for both player and team. Figo has allot to give to the club and football in this region and Al-Ittihad is one of the strongest Asian teams, winning the Asian champions league several times and enjoys immense following both in Saudi and outside.
You can read the report here (If Arabic isn't a problem), or just go and see the other pictures.

Mancini Denies Figo's Transfer to Saudi Club

04 January, 2007

Today's Akhbar Alkhaleej news paper reported that Inter's manager, Mr. Roberto Mancini denied rumors of Figo's transfer to the Saudi famous club "Alittihad".
Mancini also denied other rumors about Real Madrid's David Beckham's potential move to Inter.
However, Mancini commented "Figo will remain with Inter, until further notice". This was transelated from Arabic so it could easily mean "Unless situations change".
Shown here is Figo training at the Bahrain National Stadium yesterday 3rd, at a cold 11C weather.

Bahrain Vs. Intermilan: Utter and complete nonsense

03 January, 2007

This may probably be the first post I do in Arabic (For the convenince of Newspapers and locals), English will follow the Arabic.

Our national team's “Pink” (It doesn’t deserve to be called red anymore) match against Intermilan’s Blue & Black is utter & complete nonsense.
The Bahraini Football Association (BFA) celebrates its 50th anniversary. Celebrating this occasion is like laughing at your own stupidity.
I shall not delve into the past, I will merely show the incompetence of its management through the ages from that single game.

1) Announcing the match: People were upset. Sure they wanna see Intermilan and there is a huge following for them here. But seriously, there is little to be proud of. And with the sorry state of our infrastructures, this money can be put to better use. STILL, I said that’s fine. Our young team needs to face off against giant players like Figo, Toldo & Adriano. They need to build their experience.
2) Khamis Eid’s retirement: Khamis Eid is to retire at this match? And play a complementary 10 minutes? What the..? what was a good prep match became a semi-retirement match for Mr. Eid. That’s not right, is it? Also, the player has his own history and deserves a proper send off, not attaching him like that like an afterthought. That’s bad. STILL, I said that’s fine. He will be honoured just the same, we do not have a large budget (heh, still delusional) and 10 minutes won’t hurt practice much.
3) How to F*** things up: Sami Aljaber & Nawaf Altimyat, both Saudi players, are to play in OUR NATIONAL TEAM? AND AT OUR OWN REQUEST? WTF? What is your excuse now?
You may want a definition of “National Team”:
National: Means in Bahrain two things: cheap local booze or something of the mother country. Something patriotic.
And Team: means a selection of individuals.
For our dyslexic officials that means Bahraini members selected to play football. Not retired members and certainly not Saudi members.
What the hell can this match be now?
Celebration? There is nothing to celebrate. Training? You screwed that up. Retirement ceremony? Lie, it’s an obvious afterthought. This match won’t even be expected to be strong at all with this set up. Hello boredom.

Thanks BFA, this match will be utter & complete nonsense. Let’s just pray that the laughter heard all over the gulf does not echo in Italy.

Ruqaya Alghasra wins Gold in 200m women Asian games Doha 2006

11 December, 2006

Ruqaya Alghasra
won today the gold medal for running women's 200m event in the Doha 2006 Asian games.
She was the slowest out of the blocks, but she gains alot of speed in a scary way. She finished the 200m in 23.19 seconds. She also won Bronze for 100m.
What makes this woman so special, is that she runs fully clothed, adhering to her Islamic belief.
She has very strong mindset, to go against everyone just because you believe in what you do needs it. So what if the wind will tug at her clothes and slow her down? She'll just run faster! And that she does!
She is impressive when she runs, I am proud to stand next to her and say I am a Muslim and a Bahraini.

Ruqaya, you are tough. Kudos to you and congratulations! You make all of Bahrain proud.

Taekwondo Competitions today. BAHRAIN GO!

07 December, 2006

If you were ever wondering what am I a redbelt in, its WTF Taekwondo.

I had the pleasure to study under the amazing referee and coach, Sabumnim Abdulla Aldoy. I had to quit before I attain my black belt due to work and mixed schedules. But TKD will always be in my blood.

I am still loyal to the Black & Yellow Aldoy's TKD Centre in Riffa. I'm glad that most of our team consists of their members.

They will start at 2:30 PM, I am wishing them luck with all my heart.
